The Richard Janigian Vietnam Memorial, located at the Beaverton Elks Lodge in Portland, Oregon, holds the distinction of being the first Vietnam memorial dedicated in the state. It honors the memory of Corporal Richard A. Janigian, a brave Marine who gave his life in service during the Vietnam War. The memorial also serves as a tribute to all Oregon Vietnam veterans, recognizing their sacrifices and dedication.
The memorial was established through the combined efforts of the Elks Lodge, Marine Recruiters, and the Portland Inspector/Instructor staff. In 1972, Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, Raymond G. Davis, officially commemorated the site by laying a wreath on the memorial, marking it as a place of remembrance and gratitude.
Cpl. Janigian’s father, “Buck” Janigian, a WWII Marine, not only endured the loss of Richard in Vietnam but also faced the heartbreaking loss of another son on active duty with the Marines. The memorial stands as a poignant symbol of the ultimate sacrifices made by service members and their families, ensuring their legacy is never forgotten.
