A symbol of faith and cultural heritage, the newly consecrated Armenian cross (khachkar) at St. James Armenian Church in Richmond, Virginia, exemplifies the dedication of its parishioners to preserving their identity. Consecrated on June 14 by Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, the khachkar will replace the previous stone cross on the church dome, which had been damaged by lightning.
This cross, handcrafted in Aleppo, Syria, reflects the simplicity and elegance of traditional Armenian design. Created by Kevork Ayvazian, a renowned craftsman whose work adorns Armenian churches worldwide, the 1.5-foot-wide and 3.5-foot-tall cross captures the essence of Armenian spirituality. Harut and Sevana Ayvazian, long-time parishioners, were instrumental in its design and donation.
More than a structural element, the khachkar signifies the Armenian heritage of the St. James community. Harut Ayvazian expressed his pride in contributing to the enrichment of the Armenian Church, emphasizing the importance of maintaining identity in a smaller community. He noted, “If you see that cross, you are going to know that this is an Armenian church.”
This addition to the church dome symbolizes not only a visual representation of Armenian Christianity but also the enduring faith and unity of the St. James parish.
