Bio


Marvin Baxter (born Badgasarian in 1940) was raised on his family’s farm in Fowler, California.


With a bachelor’s in economics form California State University, Fresno, and a law degree from UC Hastings College of the Law, Baxter became a Fresno County deputy district attorney in 1967. Two years later, he entered private practice.


In 1983, Baxter moved back into public service as he became Appointments secretary, advising Governor George Deukmejian on judicial and executive appointments.


In 1983, Baxter was named an associate justice of the California Court of Appeal for the Fifth District. Three years later, he was appointed associate justice of the Supreme Court of California. He was retained by the electorate in 2002.


The Los Angeles Times has described Baxter as having a “reputation among court observers as cautious, conservative and competent.”
