Larry Alan Burns is a federal judge on the US District Court for the Southern District of California.

Born in 1954 in Pasadena, California, Burns holds a BA from Point Loma College and a JD from the University of San Diego School of Law.

After working as a deputy district attorney of San Diego County, he served as an assistant US attorney of the Southern District of California.

In 1997, Burns was appointed as a magistrate judge for the US District Court for the Southern District of California.

In 2003, he was nominated by President George W. Bush to a new seat on the Southern District of California. He was confirmed by the Senate in September of that year.

In 2012, Burns wrote an op-ed column in the Los Angeles Times calling for a reinstatement of the federal assault weapons ban. In the article, Burns described himself as an ardent conservative and gun owner who nonetheless felt there was no “social utility” for high-capacity clips.
