James “Jim” Chankalian (born Bedros Chankalian) was a decorated veteran of the Spanish-American War (1898).
In 1887, when he was eight years old, he and his family left their native Tigranakert, in historic Western Armenia, and immigrated to the US.
Chankalian was honored for his bravery in the Spanish-American Civil War and became a captain in the US Army.
Chankalian died in 1947.
